I haven't talked much about my day job, but now feels like the right time since I recently moved away from management back into a content + community-driven role at @thunderbird.

As successful as the Thunderbird project is, there's a lot of room for us to improve our community engagement, whether that's creating a more welcome environment for new contributors OR simply being a fun "third place" for our users.

What do YOU think is missing right now? What can we do better? 👂

@killyourfm @thunderbird And I'm really not a fan of hiding stuff in a hamburger menu. They kind of make sense on mobile, but on a 4K monitor you might want to bring all options into a normal menu.

And why is it up there on the top right?

@mschfr @thunderbird I appreciate your feedback, but as I mentioned I’m specifically asking about community engagement and contributing to Thunderbird.

@killyourfm @thunderbird I had to install the addon "Move Mail Shortcuts" to be able to move mails into a specific folder with hotkeys. There is the Ctrl + Shift + M shortcut to move messages to the last used folder, but I'm sorting into several folders and I'm sure that many users are doing that.

@pitch @thunderbird You precisely nailed one of the problems I’m trying to solve, so it’s quite validating to see it. And of ALL those channels (at least on the Thunderbird side) there’s not one to just hang out and chat with the community.

(When I was running Linux For Everyone, we had a bunch of Windows and macOS users hanging out just because the community was so awesome. So I appreciate your comment about #opensuse too!)

@killyourfm @thunderbird for me, compared to other projects or even general topics, the chat is quite fragmented on the mozilla irc and matrix instance. without any plumbing/puppeting that i am aware of and a sheer mass of channels, without a curated list like: USE THESE for thunderbird, firefox, general mozilla and so on.
As a regular IRC user i struggled/failed to find a channel to idle and chat like i do in ##linux or #opensuse alltough i dont even use opensuse. 😁

@bisby @thunderbird Ohhh Nick, regarding bug reporting I hear you LOUD AND CLEAR. I may be wrong, but I’d argue the type of bug reports actually being submitted aren’t representative of the average Thunderbird user — precisely BECAUSE it’s such an ordeal to even post one. So, quite a bit may fall through the cracks.

At any rate, I hear you and appreciate the feedback.

@killyourfm @thunderbird I have 2 minor complaints that started in supernova. I would love a formal way to bug report, or file complaints via socials. I'm sure I could create a bugzilla report or something, but realistically, I'm never going to do that. No one wants that level of effort for a minor complaint.

eg: on supernova, the tabs for inbox/calendar/tasks are BELOW the action toolbar. And I hate it, but not enough to do something about it.

@bisby @thunderbird But it’s totally valid. We don’t have a healthy-sized contributor community because the gateways to doing so aren’t remotely simple, or aren’t remotely visible!

@killyourfm @thunderbird I guess this is kind of me saying "I want to be able to participate in a community, without having to explicitly join the community to contribute"... Which is probably a non-surprising thing for me to say on Mastodon.

@justin @thunderbird We have a BUNCH of them, but I’m guessing you’re looking for something a little less technical and little more “general chat?”

Talk to the extension developers about their needs. It avoids breaking stuff.
Also consider to hire them and Upstream some of their work.
