Ideograms are probably better on a number of dimensions but compared to other alphabetic type systems it's a definite improvement (not least for being actually designed). -

(note this probably only really extends to Classical Japanese, there've been some orthographic reforms since the 1920s) -

However, I am sympathetic to Iversonian "notation as a tool of thought" type arguments so at the very least they seem like something I *should* learn, just on the principle of the thing.
