For the past several weeks I've been debating switching to a dumb phone / flip phone (maybe a Light Phone?), but addiction clearly isn’t the issue. But I’m definitely done giving T-Mobile $55/month for something I barely use.

Anyone have good experiences with Mint Mobile in the US? (I do realize T-Mobile recently purchased them…)

@killyourfm I used mint for years. My wife still does. It has had good coverage. It's pretty cheap, but not the cheapest out there. But if you're just looking for an endorsement to kick you over the edge, yeah, we like it.

@enriquejp You may expect some brilliant answer, but mine is kinda boring. My reality is: I work from home and vastly prefer using a real keyboard and monitor whenever possible. (I also removed any work-related apps and most social media apps from my iPhone). Any screen time I use on my phone is probably answering texts or using navigation.

@killyourfm I've been on it for a few months now. Switched from AT&T. Haven't noticed much of a difference in coverage other than actually seeing my phone use 5G—never saw it under AT&T, now it's almost always in use. I always buy my phones unlocked anyway, so the lack of "free" phones that I would have gotten under one of the bigger names isn't an issue. Would recommend.

@micah Interesting. It does seem like Google Fi offers more for the money, although Mint’s $15/month plan is the cheapest overall (from what I can see).

@killyourfm I switched from Google Fi to Mint about 5mo ago thinking I'd save some money but Google Fi was cheaper in the long run and I'll be switching back next cycle. Coverage/service wise though, it's fine. No noticable difference from Google Fi that I've found. Although Fi supports data-only sims and smart watches and mint doesn't afaict if that matters to you.

@killyourfm @enriquejp that is great advice! I work from home, too. I definitely need the phone for GPS, maps, text, and phone calls. The rest could be done on a desktop.

@enriquejp @enriquejp Yep! And for music, I use Plex now so I can just download a bunch of music ahead of time and not even need data for streaming tunes.

@killyourfm I thought so too but the price they quote is only for your first 3mo of owning a mint mobile account. It's hidden quite well in the fine print. I'm on the more expensive unlimited plan. The site says that should cost $90 for 3 months and it did. However my next 3 months were $120. They want you to prepay a year at a time for that lowest pricing but they don't make that super clear. They also make it pretty unclear how to change to that 12mo plan.

@rik Thanks for the vote and the warm welcome back. I left Croatia last June and came back to California but haven’t talked publicly about all the reasons. So don’t feel like you missed a lot.

@killyourfm I use US Mobile. You have the choice of Verizon or T-Mo but prices are lower and everything can be done via the web. Also choice of annual or monthly plans.

@killyourfm 2nd vote for US Mobile. Easy to manage, simple pricing, either T-Mobile or Verizon networks, etc. BTW I have missed a lot if you are living in the US again. Welcome.

@killyourfm hey appreciate the reply. I'm a cold MN resident now, we were in Ethiopia for years during the L4E era, but I never had a friend record the intro in Amharic for you. My wife is still rocking a "Linux + Coffee" sticker on her laptop BTW :-)
