   I’ve heeded the call of the decentralized web, and launched a new blog on teaching.

   For the first post, I worked my somewhat popular Mastodon thread on liberal arts and human freedom into an essay:

   It’s mostly what was in that Masto thread, but I rounded it out a bit with some editing and a few new thoughts. Enjoy!

     The new blog and the whole site are new (and unreasonably bespoke) spare-time code, still in progress, so please let me know if it’s broken in your browser, the RSS feed doesn’t work, etc.

     @mjibrower Oh how bizarre. Thanks for the heads up.

     My site is hosted on a Linode, a cloud hosting service where many virtual servers can share an address. Maybe there’s another site with the same external IP that’s dubious?? (My site does not “provide information or tools on how to bypass Internet access controls and browse the Web anonymously,” although maybe it should!)

     If you have a chance to send it to your IT folks, I’d be curious to hear what they say.

     @inthehands My institution has your site blocked. The reason it gives is “Proxy Avoidance.” 🤷♀️

     I wrote Superfluous specifically to make this site. Still unsure whether that was wise, but it was entertaining!

     If the site loads fast, it’s just because it’s simple: very little JS, one stylesheet, and few external resources. Superfluous itself is style-agnostic; it’s much closer to gyb than Wordpress, if that makes sense.

     @inthehands I'm on good terms with the head of IT; I'll send it on to him. I would think that at AN EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTION a teaching blog would be safe, but apparently NO. :-) We have a large dual/concurrent enrollment program (and we're in Oklahoma), so our filters are stricter than I would like.
