kaia (kaia@brotka.st)'s status on Friday, 01-Mar-2024 23:49:09 JST kaia I have this automatism where I ask people how they are doing. this is not super common in Germany and usually well received, but I also had strangers start crying or something. so it's mixed results.
yesterday a clearly mentally disturbed man had wandered into the department and I could talk to him about how he was doing until someone came to fetch him.-

p (p@raru.re)'s status on Saturday, 02-Mar-2024 02:50:59 JST p in my experience, people say "how are you" as a greeting, not that they actually want to know
which kinda sucks cause I just assume people *don't* want to know and are just being cordial

kaia (kaia@brotka.st)'s status on Saturday, 02-Mar-2024 02:51:31 JST kaia @p yeah, in some countries like the US "how are you" is much more formalistic and if you say anything but "I'm great, how are you?" it's already weird -
