   I have this automatism where I ask people how they are doing. this is not super common in Germany and usually well received, but I also had strangers start crying or something. so it's mixed results.
   
   yesterday a clearly mentally disturbed man had wandered into the department and I could talk to him about how he was doing until someone came to fetch him.

     in my experience, people say "how are you" as a greeting, not that they actually want to know
     which kinda sucks cause I just assume people *don't* want to know and are just being cordial

     @p yeah, in some countries like the US "how are you" is much more formalistic and if you say anything but "I'm great, how are you?" it's already weird

     Frage immer Leute in Deutschland "Wie geht's?" Vielleicht ist das anstrengend, ich weiß nicht. Aber niemand hat mich getötet...
