   This bullshit going on reminds me about something that happened on the Fedi a few years back about how this popular tankie dude was trying to debunk the poverty draft with some study from the Cato Institute that didn't say what he thought it said.

     I really need internet leftists to understand that the US military grooms children, and has admitted to there being a poverty draft.

     If you are a USian who never considered joining the military (or at least would consider it if you could), then you're fucking privileged.

     ...and I need people to incorporate that into their analysis when they talk about these things, in addition to just stop fucking moralizing and expecting perfection out of people doing a brave act. Which is what this was.

     Like, I thought Smedley Butler was hardcore, but Aaron Bushnell is nothing less than a hero by any sort of standard. If you don't agree with that, just fuck off.

     @big_louse I don't think he was talking about white people specifically? Maybe? But I do explicitly remember he showed this Cato Institute study where it was like, talking about how not everyone was in the military for money or college benefits (which, of course, one could also talk about methodology issues there, and I'm sure Cato did because for whatever it's worth their research is thorough af, but I digress), and thus there's no poverty draft. Like um...this says at least a good portion did join for that reason lol.

     ...and yes, I can definitely tell you that bipoc folks are far over represented in the lower enlisted ranks.

     Yeah i think I remember that it was like 'oh actually white people are over-represented in the military" which is false, poc are over represented, upper class white men are over-represented in the officer ranks, which is a big difference
