   my laptop from 10 years ago still works perfectly fine, better than brand new. it can do the same as a laptop from 2 years ago but a laptop from 2 years ago flickers, has a fucked up chassis and doesn't even have upgradable ram or anywhere near as much upgradable stuff in general as mine 😎 Total consoomer death

     @meso how did you procure the 10yo laptop and what kind of laptop is it? consoomer stuff has *always* been garbage, doesn't matter what time it was made in (I got a HP laptop in 2011 and it was on life support pretty much within the year, completely dead by 2013)

     @meso Yeah that explains it then. If you got a ThinkPad or Latitude brand new today (or a MacBook for that matter), you could expect similar service lifetimes out of it as the stereotypical T420 as shilled by /g/ and every FOSS person in existence.

     @allison ebay. thinkpad. make good choices have good usage. it was a really good fucking deal and its im pretty sure the best thinkpad specs-wise, like its genuinely got beefy specs, rarely see those on listings

     @meso For sure, playing the used market is expedient given the way things have mostly slowed down, but I'm mostly making the comparison in the sense of price being no object. Also I wouldn't buy a ThinkPad used nowadays, I'd probably go Latitude if I was forced.

     @tiskaan @meso Maybe. Just avoid Inspiron like the plague. The reason I say the thing about preferring Dell in $CURRENT_YEAR is that the parts and repairability situation is a lot better than nu-ThinkPads, and this trend is only going to increase over time.
