So many great developers I’ve been looking up to have completely fallen for the AI scam.
Extremely annoying and disappointing, but also morbidly fascinating.

@thomasfuchs it can be a decent enough tool in the right hands but nowhere near AGI and dangerous if you don't wield it properly. Way over hyped.
@matrix9180 yes, the problem isn’t the tech itself (which is fancy autocomplete at best), it’s how it is implemented (by stealing people’s creative works), marketed (with blatant lies and an extreme amount of FUD) and sold (financed by firing scores of people to pump up stock prices)
@thomasfuchs ex. It's done a decent enough job at some simple code and definitely saved me a few minutes here and there, but I can already program and actually review the code it generates to make sure it's sane. People with no experience thinking this is going to let them build apps without a dev team are in for a rough time.
@thomasfuchs agreed. The level at which companies are shoving "AI" into everything is all hype and will fizzle out.
@thomasfuchs Yeah, it's wild. I work for an "AI company", but one that's been around since before the LLM hype and that uses a wide variety of computer intelligence tools to solve legitimate problems and not in a way that costs jobs.
And every time people ask what I do nowadays, I have to add "but not like how you think!" really quickly before people start giving me the stink-eye.
It's the crypto "fool's gold rush" all over again.
@danhulton That mentioning “AI” raises red flags with people is really all you need to know.
@thomasfuchs
Same as it ever was: Follow the money.
The sad truth is only "AI" (those are air quotes) investments are getting new capital investment now.
And really, there is no I in AI. Its just good old fashion pattern matching -- but at an incredible scale that was not possible until CPU/data storage/network speed became cheap enough and fast enough.
