    It seems a bit excessive that my single user Mastodon instance has ~60G of media even though I run all the various purge commands to keep only 7 days.

    "tootctl media usage":
    Attachments: 38.5 GB (1.12 GB local)
    Custom emoji: 1.16 GB (0 Bytes local)
    Preview cards: 725 MB
    Avatars: 9.47 GB (73.9 KB local)
    Headers: 6.37 GB (191 KB local)
    Backups: 0 Bytes
    Imports: 0 Bytes
    Settings: 0 Bytes

      @alarig @grifferz Or use a caching proxy if you'd want to avoid that, specially as storing files on disk from complete randoms on the internet sounds like a pretty awful liability.

      @alarig @grifferz Storage is more volatile by design (it could even be in RAM) and it's easier to enforce storage quotas where the least accessed file ends up getting overwritten/erased and a file that's too big either doesn't gets saved or redirects.
      Meanwhile Mastodon is quite stuck to periodically doing wipes like a really bad garbage collector.
