okay so I have this old desktop and there is a good deal on on SAS platter drives that looks appealing how difficult would it be to install a SAS controller on that desktop and get it running with something like truenas?

@Rasp@raru.re I use a LSI SAS 9207-8i in my NAS. I have it going to a backplane with way more drives, but it also works with a breakout cable.
Make sure you check the firmware when you get it, mine wasn't updated and I ran into issues -

@Rasp@raru.re Yup they show up as: Mini SAS SFF-8087 Host to 4 SFF-8482 SAS, with the wide plugs that add sata power to the connection

@rachel nice. I've never worked with SAS drives but they're SO CHEAP when bought used right now. the cost per TB is just too worth it

@Rasp@raru.re yup yup! (Kinda neat, nerding time, the difference between sas and sata is only a little downward connection in the sata connector side, so sata data connections are a little L
Which means you can plug a sata drive into a sas port, and it works minus some more advanced drive features, but it doesn't work the other way around) -

@Rasp@raru.re yeah used sas drives are a fantastic way to populate/build a NAS, I have done the same, actually just ordered some drives for an upgrade
I use this script: https://github.com/Spearfoot/disk-burnin-and-testing to do a test of them which takes a bit but it is nice for piece of mind -

@Rasp@raru.re for server boot drives my go-to are now Intel enterprise SSDs, they can be found at fantastic prices, and often have very little wear
