     @Linux_in_a_Bit is that how cheap they are? i have a little fiio dac but it was still spendy. though funny enough it keeps thinking my audio interface is for surround sound :comfywoozy:
     
     also helvum. hm.
     i tried that when i started doing pipewire. i still do carla because i like to slap some audio plugins in the mix

     @Linux_in_a_Bit ah. yeah i heard some people were saying ten dollar converters were matching fiios. sort of odd to think about how much of hardware is just flat overpriced because they can.
     
     sometimes, it is not. but sometimes it really is.

     I run that pactl command in the terminal to create the audio sink then I set it as the default audio output so I don't have to manually patch in the different interfaces every time an app starts playing audio, and so that the apps know they should be outputting 7.1 surround.

     Did you know a lot of those "USB to Aux" adapters actually have very reasonable DACs in them?
     That's what the "USB Audio Analog Stereo" is.
     The other two are built in to my monitor and PC.

     @Linux_in_a_Bit yeah i use that trick too. i also run LSP's auto volume or clipper plugins in carla, and route sound to it. that's one way you can forcibly normalize all sound (while also routing some stuff out separate.)
     
     come to think of it i have four speakers now. i could use some ambisonics magic to convert it :arevblobfoxhyperthinking:

     It basically creates a unified virtual soundcard spanning different physical outputs.

     @icedquinn@blob.cat @Linux_in_a_Bit@linuxrocks.online qpwgraph is fun. right now im only piping my dreamcast's 3.5mm into a vintage but serviceable unit (m-audio transit) then into easyeffect's sink. but it was very easy

     @freon @Linux_in_a_Bit i might have to port freemo's graph algorithm back to c so i can stuff it in these programs.
     
     it does a decent job of getting you a better starting graph than what helvum et all do initially.

     @Linux_in_a_Bit yeah i don't use the fiio much. and i couldn't really tell the difference between the laptop out and the ap80 either.
     
     i conclude i don't have expensive enough headphones.
     
     it wasn't until the hd599s that i started to hear a difference. at that level they did sound just the tiniest bit less muddy coming out of the dedicated units. (i guess the hd599 is just almost fancy enough; its in a twilight zone where some computers aren't powerful enough and it gets muddier sounding for people)

     As long as your DAC has a low enough noise floor and doesn't distort it's fine!

     @Linux_in_a_Bit would be an interesting experiment to throw ambisonics in this mix you made though.
     
     in theory you put the channels in an encoder and tell the encoder to position the speaker where dolby actually specifies it should go. then you mix the surround sound channels all together. and then tell the decoders where you actually put the speakers.
     
     although, idk, maybe it doesn't matter so much. i just know that the audio technicians are quite specific that surround sound should be installed in a particular layout.
