    I made the mistake of going on Twitter today to find a tweet. 😬

    I'm glad Urbanist Twitter is not representative of actual urbanists, because it's basically just this. 😆

    I will never understand the mentality of people who dislike a YouTuber and then rant about it for months on social media, instead of doing something sane like, say, watching something else, making the content they want to see, or maybe touching grass.

    I genuinely think that too much social media rots people's brains.

      @notjustbikes urbanist twitter kills me. You get a bunch of yappers and not a soul who does anything. You can ask them to send a single email and nothing gets done. They’ll post the grassy tram tracks tomorrow though and bemoan the lack of urbanism in America (if only someone would do something).

      I used to have a page for our ST local conversation there, but I just got frustrated with them after a while and killed it. We just have an FB page and email list for locals now

      @nicksname Oh, sweet summer child. Never go near Urbanist Twitter.

      One week they're upset about what I said, the next week they're upset about what I didn't say.

      Nothing is ever good enough for the people who do nothing but complain.

      I cannot understand why they can't just go watch something else.

      @Darriengineer Put it this way: @notjustbikes is vital but not sufficient!

      Also (like a lot of things) I wouldn't call this a uniquely US problem, just its more extreme there. And for some absurd reason other countries look up to them!

      Road-loving racists are currently in power in my corner of the world: New Zealand. Though my council seems to be thinking right if not my mayor.

      @notjustbikes @Darriengineer you also don’t even live in America…

      In any case if the movement is as strong as one person it’s not a movement. And even if it is you’re not the vanguard of the revolution, just a guy who makes videos.

      The day folks realize that, maybe the sooner they’ll do something too. At least I want to believe.

      @Darriengineer Yes, they're always looking to someone else to solve their problems.

      I'm fed up with the constant criticism & harassment from Americans who will do less to promote the spread of good urbanism in their entire lives than I will in a typical year.

      "Sure, you've made online urbanism a recognized category on YouTube, you're responsible for the majority of Strong Towns members signups, and you've introduced millions of people to good urbanism, but what have you done for me lately?" 🙄

      Yes, I think so. I believe that if you are truly passionate about a subject, that will come through in the video and it will perform better.

      A great example is my recent video about Driebergen-Zeist.

      It makes no sense, algorithmically, to make a video about a tiny train station. Too niche. But it now has 1.7 million views.

      I want to make more content like this. Not straight facts, not flashy topics. Honest videos with raw emotion.

      We'll see how it goes.

      @notjustbikes @Darriengineer can you still make money on youtube if you're not playing their weird games?

      What's worse, are the creators who decided that creating and inflating drama was more valuable to them than being part of an "urbanist pipeline."

      I've even cut contact with some creators, which, of course, they used as an excuse to create even more drama. 🙄

      They're re-creating the toxic "streamers vs video essayists" of the online-left, but for urbanism.

      Unsurprisingly, there's a huge overlap between these two communities.

      I've opted out. I'm not playing that game.

      @Darriengineer
      I had this grand idea that my channel would be the "top of the urbanist funnel", and I would send orange-pilled viewers to other channels that could provide different content for different people.

      It didn't work. The audience didn't really move, and very few creators took up the torch (the big exception being Strong Towns).

      So now everybody is still watching mostly me, and they expect me to make all of the videos that I wanted a sea of other urbanists to make.

      @exterm I said my videos will be passionate and emotional, I never said they were going to be positive.

      There's a lot to be angry about when it comes to urban planning.

      I love the Netherlands. But I shouldn't HAVE to move to the Netherlands.

      I would love to live close to my family and friends, but I felt that I couldn't, because someone in my family would get killed by a car.

      I actually think it is inappropriate to make mostly positive videos when this is the reality of the situation.
