I'd like to remind everyone that I've been warning the Linux world about the precarious, uncertain future of Firefox for years now. The single most important desktop Linux application is in a death spiral and entirely dependent on free Google money. Not a good base to work from.

With today's news, I only feel strengthened in my conviction that the major desktop projects in the Linux world need to come together in a serious manner to discuss the establishment of a browser project optimised for Linux. Pick an engine, let the GNOME and KDE developers build a native UI on top, and take matters into your own hands. If you can build the two best desktop environments in desktop computing today, you can build a first-class browser together.

    This is existential.

@thomholwerda It's been there for ages.
      GNOME? See Gnome Web.
KDE? Well sadly they abandoned Konqueror, that's on them.

@mischievoustomato @thomholwerda Did you try to see why your HW media acceleration doesn't works right?
Sounds like an hardware / driver issue to me.

(And kind of funny when AFAIK it took like a decade+ for Firefox to get HW media acceleration)

And, fun fact: Gnome Web is quite usable. I don't use it because of HW media accel being still experimental and... not working right, but once it works well I'd move to it from Firefox. It's pretty nice and looks native (to my gnome desktop)

When i enable it on uchub:
      - it hits my gpu harder than playing a game (render engine near maxed out, gpu at max clock speed
      - video decode engine is indeed engaging at least
lemme try again. Firefox does do hw video decoding on wayland, but uses more power than mpv because firefox doesn't support the fractional-scaling protocol (and enabling it breaks firefox in many annoying ways)

@mischievoustomato If you play videos with gst-play-1.0 (gstreamer command line) and you get the same broken behavior, then the issue is on gstreamer, otherwise it's maybe on webkit-gtk but would be a bit strange.
And for mpv did you configure it to use hardware decoding? (IIRC you need hwdec=vdpau, vaapi and vo=gpu)

anyway, tested it again. It doesnt hammer my igpu as strongly as it did, but, the player is very... laggy/takes time to react to user input, there's a black bar that appears when the youtube video ui is on (appears on both fullscreen and non fullscreen video) and also, when the youtube video ui is on the video will often seem to repeat past frames showing a jittery/back-and-forth motion. Pretty weird. Idk if i have the energy to report this atm
