To believe things without evidence is the definition of belief; a kind of litotes. That would make believing the deepest sin. True believers believe things against evidence, that is the definition of faith. The more defiantly against the evidence, the more righteous the faith. The cheerful nihilist says that is the deepest sin.

tinydoctor (tinydoctor@mstdn.social)'s status on Tuesday, 13-Feb-2024 22:53:30 JST tinydoctor I suspect the human ability to believe impossible stuff against evidence is a hard wired (i.e. genetically determined adaption), an inherited survival trait. Like all survival traits bequeathed to us by natural selection, it doesn't necessarily promote the survival of individuals. Some people lack the gene; a resevoir against the possibilility that belief becomes unsurvivable.
