ex. in texas we had an issue where californians would move in and over-pay for housing. then landlords realized with the influx of californians used to paying higher rates, they could jack up costs, and they are willing to sit on empty lots in the hope a californian whale comes in and pays more than the texan would.
@olmitch@moffintosh ex. a cali person sells their pod home for ten million dollars, goes to texas, then buys a farm house for the same amount, makes the businessfolk raise their rates because "the market will bear..."
some of the housing is kept perpetually empty for reasons like that. and then they have zoning boards deny new housing to meet climate goals or whatever.
