If someone prefers Dune 1984 to Dune 2021, I can understand it. It's weirder, more fun, has cult status, maybe they like the worms better.

If they prefer it because it's "closer to the book" I am allowed a *very strong suspicion* that it's because Liet is a man. Other than than and a few minor things added from prequel books, 2021 stays much closer to the book.

@clacke I rewatched the 2021 Dune at the weekend. It's even better than I remembered.

It's been a long time since I saw the 1984 version, but I remember being very annoyed by the fact that that film largely missed the point of the book.

I thought we were pretending Dune 1984 didn't happen and the previous version was the SciFi version around 2000.

@clacke The only thing that really bothers me about Dune 2021 is how emotional Jessica is portrayed. She’s a Bene Gesserit, she wouldn’t show her emotions!

@clacke I like the 1984 version more because it was bolder visually, and played out more like a thriller than an action movie, which does feel closer to the book where action scenes are kind of abstracted away. The 2021 version is visually impressive, but less aesthetically daring and a tad too fighty, which dissipate a little the constant paranoia developed in the book that everybody is feeling at all times at this level of political power.

I also agree with @tipjip about Jessica who doesn’t represent the frightening Bene Gesserit cult very well.

I’m still looking forward to the subsequent Villeneuve movies.

I love them both. The 2021 version is massive, gorgeous, and epic, but does feel a bit hollow or shallow to me somehow, in a way I can't really explain.

Maybe it is that the 1984 has a bolder vision, is more opinionated, and that imbues it with a vibrant life that's somewhat lacking from the movie that just tries to follow the book as closely as possible.

And if it failed to follow the book as closely as possible, it's Baron Harkonnen. And yet that was the most daring thing the movie did. Funny that.

I love the 1984 version, but what makes it good is how camp and weird it is. The departures from the book – the weirding module, the mysticism played straight, the heart plugs – those are the things that make it unique and make it what it is.

I really loved the dry and factual character of 2000, and all the politics, and I felt it an improvement over 1984, which I had grown to find a bit silly, but now I look back at 1984 with more fondness because it's just more visceral and primal. It misses core concepts and kind of the point of the book, but it is its own thing.

One could say that the book, 2000 and 2021 are more like the documentary and 1984 is the legend. As it keeps literally reminding us. 😃

2021 is the "best" version for me, it affected me deeply and it will again when I rewatch it this month. But it's not the most fun version. 😁

@tipjip These things can be great. We did a Lord of the Rings marathon when Return of the King was released. Watching all three films as one was fantastic 😀

@Paul @mcv @clacke @hypolite @efraim I did a Star Trek marathon once. But I think back then it was only seven movies. Good times. 🤩

@tipjip @mcv @clacke @hypolite @efraim A nearby cinema is running a Dune marathon in early march -- six hours with a twenty minute pause between the films.

I am still trying to convince my partner that she really wants to do this 😉

I will definitely be rewatching 2021 soon as well. Either when part 2 is released, or together with my son, who has to read and watch it for school.

I haven't seen the 2000 version yet. Should I? I think it's the only version that goes into the sequels, which I also haven't read, because I've been told quality goes down.

@mcv You can expect a SyFy 2000 budget (the "was this city rendered on an Amiga" feeling), a bit of a stage production feeling and silly hats, but if you're up for all that I think Dune 2000 is a good visual retelling of the book, and it's great that it goes on to do Messiah and Children, which we may or may not ever see on the big screen.
