    I admit I die a little inside every time I see concrete data showing that zfs is the best file system for some use case.

      > And as far as I can tell, it has no real maintenance behind it either any more, so from a long-term stability standpoint, why would you ever want to use it in the first place?

      Linus had no problem keeping the rotting JFS in the kernel for 20 years even after it caused massive data loss for people

      @jpmens I'm sure that ZFS is a fine file system, but the fact that Sun and/or Oracle deliberately chose a license incompatible with the GPL means that it is DEAD TO ME. ☠️

      Basically I agree with Linus Torvalds when he wrote, "Don't use ZFS":

      @shane_kerr why? don't you like ZFS, or am I interpreting your toot incorrectly?

      @jpmens @shane_kerr it is very active -- even back in 2020 when this was posted -- but Linus doesn't want to acknowledge it.

      There have been 11 annual OpenZFS developer summits...

      @feld @shane_kerr ZFS no maintenance? I think it’s been rolled into https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/OpenZFS and it looks quite active to me

        OpenZFS
        OpenZFS is an open-source implementation of the ZFS file system and volume manager initially developed by Sun Microsystems for the Solaris operating system and now maintained by the OpenZFS Project. It supports features like data compression, data deduplication, copy-on-write clones, snapshots, and RAID-Z. It also supports the creation of virtual devices, which allows for the creation of file systems that span multiple disks. A capability of OpenZFS is its self-healing capabilities. The file system can detect and correct errors while in use, without the need for a dedicated file system checker. This means that it can be used in mission-critical applications that require high availability. OpenZFS is widely used in enterprise and data center environments, as well as in consumer devices like network-attached storage (NAS) devices. It is available for many operating systems, including Linux, FreeBSD, macOS, and Windows (through third-party solutions). OpenZFS is licensed under the CDDL (Common Development and Distribution License), which allows...

      @jpmens @shane_kerr there's even a cleanroom implementation in *Python*

      https://github.com/alcarithemad/zfsp

      The original on-disk specification was published in 2006: https://www.giis.co.in/Zfs_ondiskformat.pdf

      It has been ported to Windows and MacOS as well. I really doubt we'll see a time where our ZFS data is inaccessible :laugh:
