vaartis running up that hill (vaartis@pl.kotobank.ch)'s status on Monday, 05-Feb-2024 02:24:26 JST vaartis running up that hill Watched the master and margarita movie in theater
It's not comparable in quality to the tv show and very compressed
But it has some very interesting things about it
1. The USSR in it looks like atomic heart more than actual Moscow , futuristic and very big
2. It is very anti soviet / russian, even more so than the original. In the end of the movie Moscow is burning and exploding all over because of main characters actions
3. This was all made on government money (Фонд Кино), and it says things they don't say in current day Russian movies politically and despite this it's in theaters
Movie itself 6/10 but elevated by the interesting parts
Also very much a "based on" instead of adaptation, a lot of things skipped and the plot itself it 2-layered where original book is only 1 layer's contents
Budget was ~13M$ which is big for a russian movie but not that big for america-

can confirm, Gogol never gets old. Allways hiilarious to read a guy going insane. -

vaartis running up that hill (vaartis@pl.kotobank.ch)'s status on Monday, 05-Feb-2024 02:24:16 JST vaartis running up that hill @josemanuel honestly, my recommendation would be to not read dostoevski, it's a lot of words and little substance, in my opinion. Gogol is pretty fun, though -

josemanuel@qoto.org's status on Monday, 05-Feb-2024 02:24:17 JST josemanuel @vaartis I do have Anna Karenina in Russian, but I can’t speak a word of it, so… Actually, maybe it was Ukrainian and I could never tell. (It was given to me by an Ukrainian friend many years ago.)
If I ever visit Russia, I’ll buy everything Dostoievski and some Chekhov. If you have more recommendations, please let me know.

vaartis running up that hill (vaartis@pl.kotobank.ch)'s status on Monday, 05-Feb-2024 02:24:21 JST vaartis running up that hill @josemanuel probably one of my favourite russian books. I also highly recommend the 2005 TV show which adapts the book very closely if you can find it subtitled. I have it but IDK how to share it. -
