I refuse to believe you cannot scrape together ten dollars for an entire month of high quality search results. Go look for quarters under soda machines or something.
@olmitch@mischievoustomato@thegreatape what makes this search engine worth $10? Does it log or sell my info or associate it with me since I'm paying them? Can I pay with monero or other pseudo anonymous crypto? Is it unlimited for that cost?
@mischievoustomato@RustyCrab@olmitch@thegreatape I'm not opposed to paying for that if it's worth it. Since I started using a few new search engines I've had good results. Ecosia, Yandex, startpage (meh), searx are good for most things.
@BowsacNoodle@mischievoustomato@olmitch@thegreatape Extremely tight integration for search tools (ranking, AI, blocking). Their own index which doesn't ban small web results (like google does). An actual business motivation to get you what you need and off of their search engine (as opposed to other engines who are motivated to keep you looking at ads not finding what you need). AI assistance with searching and citations. Easy link previews via archives. Quick Answer is phenominal for pointing you in the right direction when your question isn't "search engine friendly".
I'm not exaggerating when I say it saves me AT LEAST an hour per day of crawling through the web looking for things. They have a free trial if you want to give it a go.
Plus they don't block VPNs, which is great for me since every other engine is just a never ending cycle of capchas now.
@BowsacNoodle@mischievoustomato@olmitch@thegreatape I should mention that Brave Search is a pretty good alternative these days for free tier. It's come a long way in the past year. However its image search is still monumental ass. Kagi's image search quality is shocking.
I haven't had to use google in 6 months and it feels great. (sans when I didn't have my kagi credentials on a new OS).
@lina@mischievoustomato yeah that was a major thing that turned me off of searx. Half the time I went to instances they were just down. The rest of the time they returned me verbatim google results. Anonymity isn't as much of a problem for me as "google results are just bullshit now and I can't find anything on there"
If nothing else, you're getting free keys to like 3 different premium AIs. but yeah, I kind of shit bricks my first few searches. Like, I used to spend hours trying to find AOL Gamera back in the day, it was a white whale and Kagi found me a working download link in moments.
i dont like having to juggle a lot of things that do the same thing one another, it's annoying as fuck. And yea, paying for stuff that's worth it and is genuinely useful should be encouraged.
@RustyCrab@mischievoustomato@olmitch@thegreatape I'd give ecosia a shot if you haven't. it found obscure forum posts from 2010 recently which is rare and valuable in the diy / "maker" space since SEO ruins everything. If Kagi can properly search, I'll pay for it. And then I'll be donating to my home instance with monero. Can't freeload forever.
@RustyCrab@mischievoustomato@olmitch@thegreatape >"learn about the history of black trans pioneers in Antarctica" This is quintessential google. Somebody should make a google doodle generator that pulls AI images based on grab bag mintories and does cal arts and write a fake biography for them. If I could code, I would.
Some people don't care about this either but it's really nice to have a search engine that has surpassed google and not having to look at google's front page every day saying "learn about the history of black trans pioneers in Antarctica"
@mischievoustomato@BowsacNoodle@olmitch@thegreatape I would previously attempt to get around their front page bullshit by using VPNs to other countries. They have since aggressively blocked VPNs however to the point where captchas can take upwards of 15 minutes to complete.
If you're not in America, you don't get the kind of preposterous shit on their front page that we do. Every other day it's like "help Black Trans Youth in your area" "click here to donate to Nigger Businesses" "Learn about White Supremacy and how you can stop it". It's so god damn tiring.
