I feel like nobody wants to hear me on this, but for VR to really work we need massive advices in basic physics & biology, like, being able to project images/video/sound directly into the brain and eye so they are literally indistinguishable from "reality". I do think Apple's device is an important and useful step forward -- the first one actually worth trying -- but a baby step nonetheless.

@codinghorror the obsession with self driving cars makes me puke.
Whats so exciting about moving around robotically these useless tons of steel and plastic that dont fit in our cities, dont make any environmental sense and are quickly getting beyond their expiry time as mobility technology.
We need to think of some really new, really cool technology targets that are good for our souls, good for our bodies and good for the planet.
Its 2024. The future is not what it used to be.

sometimes I do get sort of aggravated that I wasn't born a thousand years in the future where this stuff can actually happen. Consider that today's most advanced medicine will be considered the equivalent of bloodletting and leeches in 100 years, for example. They'll be horrified by what we were doing, but it was the best we had at the time. We have miles to go before we sleep.

it's like the whole "self driving cars are just around the corner!" and "sentient AI is just around the corner!" arguments. Hard things are hard. I do think eventually we will get there but not on the timescale journalists can get excited about, because they'll all be dead by then.

@JeffGrigg @codinghorror interestingly, ome years back google had a self-driving bike video (an april fools joke) which i thought was smart and funny.
But what does the next level up for bikes look like, and how about the level thereafter? Hopefully not spyware laden contraptions that stop working if your social media status drops below the "recommended minimum threshold".

Most people need to walk more. My parents would never walk to the local 7-Eleven; they always drove. It's 3/10ths of a mile, walking, one way. 🙄
We need more busses and trains. Public transport.
And safer bicycling.
And distributed rental bicycles and scooters.
...
(And rental cars, when needed. Like https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Share_Now )
