I really want links on social media automatically marked as “paywalled” when they are

Chris Coleman (chris@mastodon.social)'s status on Wednesday, 31-Jan-2024 01:09:03 JST Chris Coleman @thomasfuchs A a browser feature to indicate that you have an account/particular cookie/etc., and then style things on other sites based on it (without indicating to the other site) would be really cool.
For example, sticking an open lock icon next to links to Washington Post, which I have an account for, but a lock icon next to links to The Atlantic, which I don't — but across all sites, as a browser feature.
(this would probably never work but it would be cool)

Chris Coleman (chris@mastodon.social)'s status on Wednesday, 31-Jan-2024 01:23:20 JST Chris Coleman @thomasfuchs True, if it’s called out in a card like on Mastodon. But if it’s just a link in the middle of a paragraph, a lock/unlock icon after the link (like the external link icon some sites use) would be convenient.
In fact, now that I think of it, I might consider adding something like this to indicate open access research on sites for my work.

Yeah a clear marking if the linked article is paywalled or not should be nice 👍🙂. That should be the standard before anyone posts any link to an article since there's no way the OP is unaware about being paywalled or not. Except for some reason some folks forgot their subscription to that site, sometimes it can happen to those who subscribe to a lot of sites😅. -

vashbear (vashbear@hachyderm.io)'s status on Wednesday, 31-Jan-2024 03:59:05 JST vashbear I wish there was a way I could pay a tiny amount to read a single paywalled article.
Ad-Sponsored content is a disaster, and I think real journalism should be paid. But I can't afford dozens/hundreds of subscriptions to read all the potentially worthwhile articles.
I would like to load up $10 into a paywall account and then spend a few cents one-at-a-time to read shared articles from trusted contacts.
Recommenders should not be financially incentivized to promote articles!
