@http_error_418 That’s not quite right - the fact that I wasn't born in the UK and am listed as nonbinary on my birth certificate was actually a strong point in my favour.
But, yeah, the bottom line was "screw you, we can't be arsed".

As I understand it the most recent ruling can be summed up as:
"Yes the government discriminated against you, and it would recognise your gender legally if you were British, but because you're foreign it's too haaaaaard 😢"
This is of course a bullshit excuse, but challenging it is expensive.
