Bread up, Bro (sickburnbro@poa.st)'s status on Monday, 29-Jan-2024 03:16:28 JST Bread up, Bro @jeffcliff The problem is that self loathing has been promulged under the cover of humility.
this is why I mention Harrison Bergeron often. We have entered this phrase where those who are either jealous or self loathing have decided it would be better for everyone to live in slums than to have any ideals. -

Obv. this looks different if you're on the empowering vs empowered end. -

Bread up, Bro (sickburnbro@poa.st)'s status on Monday, 29-Jan-2024 03:35:50 JST Bread up, Bro @jeffcliff @haberdasher Jeffery, I would caution you that you have absolutely no idea what I want, and that you should work very hard to figure out what I do want.
Everything in modern culture provides a strawman of right wing beliefs - and those don't even correspond to mine. There are studies showing how right wingers understand leftwing beliefs, but the same is not true in reverse.
I hope you understand that having a completely incorrect of approximately half of the population is fatal for anything trying to be democratic. -

But it is the white man's burden to hold the torch of civilization, and to civilize the world generally. -

If you like democracy, I would suggest that a situation where a massive amount of the population is ignored and actively denigrated is not a good sign for the stability of the franchise.
As the military recruiting problem in the US and UK point to, conservative people are giving up on their governments. -

I can only go by what you actually say.
> There are studies showing how right wingers understand leftwing beliefs, but the same is not true in reverse.
I'm aware that there are such studies. [ But I would caution you putting too much water into them for particular individuals - most left-wingers don't spend ~99% of their time amidst right-wing circles/areas, for example ]
> I hope you understand that having a completely incorrect of approximately half of the population is fatal for anything trying to be democratic.
Not really. Democracy is an imperfect beast, and is part of the means by which we learn across group boundaries. -

Many ventures have been ruined for ignorance of this.
When companies are sold, "goodwill" is listed as a component of the valuation, but it is not something that can be rigorously tested.
Budwiser's experiences last year is a good example of how, to their executives exasperation, goodwill can falter overnight at the cost of billions of dollars. -

Sure, that's not a healthy democracy.
> As the military recruiting problem in the US and UK point to, conservative people are giving up on their governments.
Both have been imperial powers within living memory, and have been involved in both atrocities and abandoning their veterans. Lots of reasons that compounded over time lead to their current situation. But of course, the 'giving up on their governments' is part of it for sure. -

Christmas Man (christmas_man@thebag.social)'s status on Monday, 29-Jan-2024 04:04:35 JST Christmas Man But it is a handout. Providing ready built and functional infrastructure to a people who don't understand it won't make them care about learning how it was built or how to maintain it, it just satisfies an immediate desire without solving the underlying cause of the desire. Just because it's not something you can pick up and literally hand to people doesn't mean the granting of the resource isn't a handout. -

Christmas Man (christmas_man@thebag.social)'s status on Monday, 29-Jan-2024 04:04:36 JST Christmas Man Giving handouts and boosting them up to positions people couldn't obtain on their own won't empower them, it creates cargo cults that demand more stuff. Cultural behaviors aren't widgets that the users can replace on a whim. If a culture lacks the inherent structure that supports a basis of understanding to build a system for themselves, airdropping them inside the system isn't going to cause some "Aha!" moment to occur. -

Most white americans don't care how nuclear reactors, aluminum plants, or the linux kernel works, either. And we're not likely to get to a point where they do.
This is part of division of labour of a highly technoindustrial world.

Sure it can be. Which is why measures of commitment are desirable, both between individuals and groups - to turn trust into something more tangible.

I know. I'm the guy who started the Meredith Whitney wikipedia article, even. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Meredith_Whitney - [ though looks like successive wikipedia edits has mostly scrubbed why that's relevant, interestingly ]
