- "Have you tried forking this older version that'll need a lot of work to get up to par?"
- "Have you tried using this library that only requires you to write a new frontend or heavily modify an existing one?"
I don't have the time or spoons to DIY myself out of every hole our modern software hell digs us into and assuming that all I need is an encouraging voice to let me know that "you can do it!" is actually really patronizing.
I know what I can do and I know how much resources I have to do things. I won't be joining or forking this particular project to fix it and that doesn't invalidate my point that the thing or situation sucks.
@raccoon@Polychrome Screego does it better, Jitsi also does it better. I don't know what you mean. their screen sharing doesn't even work on Linux properly.
Spoiler. It isn't. Insisting that the Foss alternative works better when it just doesn't is doing the opposite of helping, you are looking like an idiot and making people think open source is all trash. Example, I hate discord and don't use it, but they fucking nailed screen sharing. Not a single Foss alternative I use does it as efficiently, fast and with the same quality.
@meso@the.asbestos.cafe@Polychrome@poly.cybre.city alright how about this. Send me links of meso approved instances, I will test them when I'm at home and if you're right I'll just say so. I WANT Foss alternatives to be as good or better, but so far it's seldom the case. The only reason I use them is ethical, not practical. In most cases at least.
@raccoon@Polychrome it's literally as good, it's usually better. the fact that dushman uses shitty instances instead of using good ones with good settings is his fault entirely. most public instances are capped at like 10fps or some stupid shit, my friend's is 60fps 4K, bitrate is as good as your internet can handle. it's definitely better than Discord.
@raccoon@Polychrome it's always the case, I don't know what you mean. I also use them because they're ethical, that's the point, practicality is only secondary to me and most of the time they are very practical (usually when you're not using mainstream things, smaller software is just better) https://meet.troplo.com <- run by my friend, it's a good instance though it dies every once in a wihle because Jitsi is a horrible Java Piece of shit
it's literally webrtc, discord cannot "get it" better than FOSS implementations because it's the same protocol, they do nothing differently they just have the server capacity and investor money to have moderately high 720p30 quality for everyone, but that's something certain instances like my friends' do, just don't fucking shill the fsf's jitsi instance or jit.si because they're limited purely arbitrarily due to resource constraints, they're not really indicative of how well Jitsi's screensharing performs
though on a related note Jitsi is a piece of shit written in Java, it's honestly a nightmare to host and it actually breaks other stuff on your server. it's definitely better than Discord in that at least you can self host it, even if the backend's going to cripple your server.
Screego is an excellent minimalist alternative that just streams and has no conferencing or voice but it doesn't seem to be popular with people, my friend refuses to use it because he hates mumble and likes jitsi more, it's weird. i like mumble more
@raccoon@meso@methyltheobromine@Polychrome lucy were you using the browser or the app? not telling yo to try again, just curious because I could only get discord working right in the app, the browser version always fails for me for screensharing/streaming
@raccoon@meso@Polychrome it is because i say so. i don't try to make you drop discord all im saying is it never worked for screenshare that well for me. teamviewer for example worked excellently for me.
@raccoon@meso@Polychrome discord video quality is absolute trash tho, the only thing discord does right is UX (except for the fact you need to go online for the client to display your probably locally stored messages and lack of e2e encryption. that said i didn't try jitsi and and videochat foss software i tried was garbage too.
