The thing that really bothers me about this iteration of Trumpism, which might be the fourth or even fifth transformative cycle these fascists have been through, is that it truly does appear to be taking on a quasi-religious expression organically, as opposed to being heavy window dressing and suggestion in the past. Ask your local historian if that's a good sign...
And this, by the way, is what I meant when I say the guy plays the part well. Most people who aren't plugged into the disgusting shit these fascists all believe can see through Trump pretty easily, but the fact that he's uniquely capable of appeasing the ideals and preconditions of a leader, a warrior, for some many different little patchwork expressions of fascist doctrines, all at fucking once, is legitimately not a good fucking sign.
And in this particular example, where we see Trump gaining genuine influence, that no longer looks like an alliance of convenience, with the evangelical right/Christian nationalist movements, we must also be aware that this means the evangelical right/Christian nationalist movements are themselves gaining influence inside the core of Trumpism; that's how these fascist movements work, always swirling and dashing forward, shifting alliances and stories like they're trying to outrun reality.
The evidence can definitely be found in mainstream media interviews with folks who openly support Trump, and are clearly living in an entirely different reality and history than anyone who doesn't also support Trump. I would however argue that the anti-LGBTQ, anti-reproductive rights policy positions of the GOP, and the recent actions of several Republican governors towards the federal government also indicates the beliefs and desires of the fundies and christofascists are being prioritized.
I''m not really talking about an election here. It's just that historically "cult of personality" + "armed fundamentalists" + "white nationalist worldview" + "fascist control of a major political party" doesn't typically end well, whether or not they win political power the normal way. It's kind of a known recipe for shocking violence and a whole pile of bodies, even if said movement is vastly less successful than say, the Nazis in Germany. It roots in deep, sometimes for generations.
We over here in Germany thought we had it fixed and after all was in ruins it worked for a while.
No more. Fascists didn't go away. They just had to STFU for a few decades, but after the ruins were gone, they once again came out of their shit holes. Slowly at first, hesitant, but bit by bit they moved the threshold. Two steps forward, one step back when people reacted negatively, moving what was deemed "acceptable" bit by bit, using whatever the rules allowed unscrupulously.
A key point being "fascist control of a major political party." In the US this is particularly dangerous because there are only two major political parties, and fascism can not be marginalized by the expansion of other parties.
@AnarchoNinaWrites Gonna sound like a stuck up asshole here. I mean well. I really do. But...is there really any wonder? Like really really? There isn't much difference between trump and the christian church for a reason. Because he IS the christian church.
Hell, he's the very core principles of religion period. Like there's a reason fascism almost always also has religion on it's side. The similarities between manipulative tactics exist because they are the same tactics.
That whole us vs them thing was literally born out of religion for most of the human population. Instilled in people to one degree or another since people could understand language.
Trump works for so many because religion long ago laid the groundwork. That aggressive determined to stay ignorant bit? Is a feature not a bug. Convince a person to keep their eyes closed and they'll follow you anywhere kind of thing.
