Nobody likes the 30% AppStore fee, but it has never been a credit card processing cost.
It has always been a marketplace access fee.
That’s the principle of building malls and other commercial public spaces: they invest to create a space for people to flock into and advertise and maintain it.
That’s what you are paying for.

@thomasfuchs no, I think that you can build web apps.
For instance, I could have built a pure terminal emulator as a PWA. Maybe someone will one day, but I chose a different path for the experience I wanted (incidentally, several terminal apps are just xstern.js on WebKit wired up to libssh).

@thomasfuchs do these apps need all those APIs? A handful maybe? When I boycotted twitter I told myself “I’ll delete the app, but still use the website”. It worked fine.
I gave up because i had too many tabs open :-)

I know this is an analogy… but why are you paying rent at the mall if you have no customers there?
Why are you in that mall at all if that isn’t where your customers are?

@thomasfuchs nah, I have been selling software for a long time and I am just familiar with how sales work: commissions, cost of distribution channels, and so on. I am trying to share those lessons in a bite-sized toot-form.
The better educated we all are, the more meaningful the discussions and the better plans for alternatives we can have.
My first proprietary product in the 90s made me about 4% after all the commissions.
