Back when hearing the sound of screaming robots meant you had an Internet connection.

DazzaNZ (dazzanz@noauthority.social)'s status on Sunday, 21-Jan-2024 06:35:04 JST DazzaNZ New Zealand has gigabit fibre to the home in every village with more than ~60 houses
1000/500Mbps. In towns and cities, 8Gbit. But the most common plan is 300Mbps because it's ~20% cheaper than gigabit. The other 5% of the county has fixed 4G internet, some places use satellite.
They took down the copper network in my street about two years ago. The 300Mbit internet is €39/month. I could be cheaper, but everything is expensive on an island.

Thorwegian ❄️ (thor@berserker.town)'s status on Sunday, 21-Jan-2024 06:35:05 JST Thorwegian ❄️ @mk Here in Norway, they started decommissioning the phone lines a couple of years ago. Hardly any customers left. Beginning on 1 January 2023, the service was shut down for good.
Fibre access at home is pretty common. The Altibox company has been offering it to home customers since 2003. In Sweden, they got it even earlier.
Where there isn't fibre, there's cable. And where there isn't either, there's mobile or wireless.

DazzaNZ (dazzanz@noauthority.social)'s status on Monday, 22-Jan-2024 08:46:48 JST DazzaNZ It's crazy watching the implosion of the Europe.
We have some of the same problems but, at least, the electricity is still reasonable. We have many huge hydro dams, and instead of nuclear, we have geothermal for reliable base load.
We flip-flop between a leftish and a rightish government. It is interesting seeing working people celebrate the current direction of the rightish coalition. We have mixed-member-proportional voting.

mk (mk@mastodon.satoshishop.de)'s status on Monday, 22-Jan-2024 08:46:48 JST mk i think that all people that voted center-left 10 years ago, are now voting center-right
because the left did this:
- sexualizing small children
- putting people into caterories and discriminating them based on perceived oppression (DEI/ESG-score)
- feminism turned into man- and trad-wife hating
- decriminalizing actual criminals while criminalizing dissident
- open-border politics
- covid-totalitarism
- constantly lying to the people through the propaganda media
