Except for layer 1 stuff, we're pretty much done with shopping and ordering for the new #FOSDEM local network and server setup. Almost everything under under direct control has been scheduled for upgrades or replacement.
We're using largely refurbished hardware because it's easier on the environment and because we don't need _that_ much local oomph compared to e.g. #37c3.

I also ordered 220 pairs of https://www.engelbert-strauss.de/en/coated-work-gloves-latex/latex-knitted-gloves-senso-grip-2100740-7613507-0.html in all sizes for #FOSDEM today. Finally we will have something for volunteers' and our own hands.
I ~always bring my own pair, but finally having proper gloves for everyone carrying heavy stuff from A to B or doing other intense work is good.

Guess who ordered all the optical transceivers and cables, plus a bunch of "oh shit" spares and adapters in looooong and in "weird connector" and in BiDi 1270/1330 etc for #FOSDEM.
We'll be there on Thursday Feb 1st to rip and replace most of the things.

I'm on the long tail of ordering stuff for #FOSDEM... Today I realized that a handful of USB to serial cables and a charger which we leave on site in case of emergencies would be nice. We're approaching a level of comfort and preparation I would not have dreamed of a few years ago...

Anyway, we finally have stable enough planning to do ALL the upgrades now, and we're grasping that chance.
Attending #37c3 and doing a small part to run that network (mainly Observability and teardown as per usual) was already great. Having #FOSDEM come right after is awesome.
If you see me, I will be wearing a #mask as per usual, but I am fine with fistbumps, shaking hands, and hugs depending on how well we know each other.

Side note: it was not COVID-19, I was blood tested as one of the first people on Earth in March? April? of 2020, because I was sick as a dog after #36c3 for a week or two. The story of a trained virologist coughing openly into an elevator and the two major Munich universities fighting over making CERTAIN that both had a hand in the testing in case I came back positive is for another day, mayhaps.

The pandemic stopped us from doing the same in 2020 because we started to be preoccupied with getting hand sanitizer for everyone. I got liters and liters of hand sanitizer through airport security. They asked if I was going to China. I had a single mask with me and didn't use it. Afterwards, I spent a week at the #Grafana engineering leadership breathing through my mouth as my nose was so clogged. Seems quaint now.

When I joined the #FOSDEM network team in 2010 or so, we managed to get down from "done with setup at 02:00 to 09:00" (the latter with two opening talks prepared, one for "welcome", one for "sorry, no WiFi", literally radioing in "go with normal welcome" five(?) minutes after the opening talk was supposed to start like in a bad movie. Same as with the beer event and catering, other staff have started to call this process of Richih gets annoyed "to Germanize". Make of that what you will.

We also got a load of new hand tools, label maker and tape, screwdrivers, velcro, proper scissors, ear protection, I even thought of paper notebooks. Pain levels should drastically reduce as a result. Come to think of it, a nice folding chair and a ladder might also be a good idea.

The #FOSDEM video boxes will also be completely new and have a higher degree of Free Open firmware. Not possible with network yet. We will take another look in 2-3 years.
I should be getting the usual IPv4 temporary PI assignment on Friday and will start announcing it. In particular with physical upstream changes we might need a week or two to explain stuff to upstream. That's something I don't miss about main job backbone work in the least.

This allows us to move most if not all services to on-site. #FOSDEM video streaming frontend still TBD -- my gut is that we don't want to functionally lock the only people who can do on-the-fly traffic engineering (said people would be me, myself, and I) into the NOC at all times. As such my strong preference is to keep the last stage off-site.

The ASR 1006 is getting a second routing engine for the second 10Gbit/s upstream link, the whole #FOSDEM distribution layer replaced and upgraded to single mode fiber with 1310nm, rendering farm moved to 10G capable RJ45 ports, servers replaced with three "new" ones and 6*2TB actually new SSDs for local ceph. Over the next few weeks we will rip out most of the existing stuff and will do final cleanup the Thu and Fri before FOSDEM proper.
