@sickburnbro I heard a story of some spics that hung sheet rock on the outside of a house.

@Nesano @sickburnbro That's a new thing, believe it or not. They have special types for exterior use for noise reduction and insulation. It's far better than OSB, but I wouldn't be surprised if they used regular interior drywall to be cheap.

@BowsacNoodle @Nesano "better" .. I'm not sure about that.

@sickburnbro @Nesano If their marketing and materials guides are to believed, it's probably better. I could see something that's basically compressed rock powder working better than wood chips and glue for sound, but who knows.

Can't imagine that gypsum of any kind would last long - even moisture resistant versions. Quite common over here to clad houses with cement fibreboard though. Various depths have very good heat and sound insulation properties when installed properly. Look pretty good as well.

@longshanks @Nesano @sickburnbro Youre still supposed to cover it with siding or something else, but it's coated with waterproofing and sometimes fiberglass reinforced in the panel itself. Fireproofing because it's gypsum, and you can butt it up to other pieces directly since there's no swelling (hopefully). People are lazy and cheap though, and I wouldn't be surprised if it's plopped right down and coated with ceramic paint.

@longshanks @BowsacNoodle @Nesano remember, BCX and friends are "directional" and thats the key, no-one in their right mind would tell you to use MDF where you are using a multi-directional ply, glued or not.

@sickburnbro @longshanks @Nesano >no-one in their right mind
Have you seen the stuff on Pinterest using MDF? People really are crazy. Thankfully the price went up to unreasonable levels during 2022. I bought imported marine grade plywood for a project because it was the same price.

@BowsacNoodle @longshanks @Nesano a quick search turned up interior wall accent stuff, which seems reasonable. What kind of stuff have you seen?

@sickburnbro @longshanks @Nesano Furniture, shelves, closets, benches (inside for the "mudroom"). I like MDF because it takes zero sanding to get it to a good paintable surface, but all it has going for it is it's thick and heavy and used to be cheap.

@BowsacNoodle @longshanks @Nesano I don't like it because when it sustains damage the entire piece is almost unsalvageable

@sickburnbro @longshanks @Nesano Yeah that's a problem too. I have used it to make a work surface though, and I "painted" it with wood glue diluted down with high proof alcohol. It ended up so smooth I had to rough it up with sandpaper. I spilled all kinds of stuff on that top and never had swelling or issues though.
