    Tech is full of people who won the lottery then convinced themselves and others they are geniuses.

    The tragedy is the people who’ve followed advice that is the tech equivalent of “buy a lot of lottery tickets” who are slowly and painfully figuring that out.

      Tech alone is never enough.

      Tech is a tool, like any engineering discipline. It does not suspend the rules of economics.

      But if you realise these basics you can, with the help of tech (optionally using your own skills) start and successfully grow businesses that solve real (!) problems.

      Those businesses do not require VCs. They won't be as big. But they can be very profitable.

      I know. I have grown several. 100% success.

      Tech is not a religion. Just an engineering tool.

      @carnage4life I remember the point in the 90s dot-com boom where I, doing Mac desktop support in Silicon Valley, got hired for $26 an hour (the equivalent of $54,000 a year) while my dad, a 20-year fire department veteran, still had a salary in the mid 40s as a lieutenant. The cognitive shear damn near broke me.

      But I already knew based on teachers' and social workers' salaries -- and fucking investment bankers' -- that societal worth had no mapping to payment structures.

      @carnage4life It’s worse than ‘buy a lot of lottery tickets’… it’s ‘I put all my money on 13 at roulette and it came up, so you should too’.
      There are plenty of things you can do wrong after your number comes up, but avoiding such mistakes is just skilled management, and a lot of skilled managers don’t ever have that luck.

      @carnage4life afaict it's pretty much a guarantee that if you're successful in business you attribute it to things that you did instead of luck and timing

      @carnage4life survivorship bias.

      It truly hit home at a conference I was in '11, that startup success advice is little more than that.
