   Travelling to the #Philippines? Here's a random tip of the day.

   “Motel”.

   In the West, a “motel” means a “motor hotel”. Meaning, a road hotel or road inn where motorists travelling far can stay and have a break.

   In the Philippines, a motel is what is called in #Japan as a #LoveHotel. A “Love Hotel” is a type of inn where people who want to have sex can stay for a short time. Stay is paid by the hour.

   If you want a place to stay for less than a day, a “capsule hotel” or “pod hotel” (originally from Japan) is also common in the country.

   Or, if you're cool staying in a motel, that's fine and usually cheaper. Nothing wrong with it. You won't hear the other rooms anyway. (Wait, how did I know that…)

     @youronlyone thats largely what a motel is in the us too, no one considers the term "motor hotel" anymore, its antiquated and unfamiliar to most people colloquially.

     @dung_eater That's sad. However, it's also possible it was a fake or compromised account. Plenty of scammers these days. Like a few years back, a Korean and African rings were busted by our local police, operating in our country. They were targeting their own people, not the Filipinos.

     @youronlyone A Filipino girl recently added me on Facebook (yuck, I know) and started messaging me. She was cool and very pleasant and I’m always open to getting to know someone so we talked. Then she sends me nudes to which I react like ‘what the fuck’. Rebuffed as she was, she has admitted to me that all she was doing was trying to find a European husband to leave the Philippines.

     @0x00string So true. And with today's interconnected world, the meanings of words change faster than before.

     I guess motels being usually cheaper led to the change in definition. LOL.

     Here in the Philippines, some motel brands are trying to reinvent their image. One started offering "family rooms" (with game consoles, and the TV have no adult channels) a few years back. And I once saw a family walked in one of their branches.

     I guess they were kinda stuck, airport related, and had no choice. But still… Haha.

     @youronlyone sure thing! for the most part, i think most americans would think of a "motel" as just being a cheaper hotel, there are some brands of them here i think would come to peoples minds most immediately, and thereafter i think things like cheap hotels specifically for sex would come up, but not as immediately as just a cheap hotel.

     i think its interesting how as time goes on and a language lives the uses and understandings of words change. fun.

     @youronlyone thats interesting! many of the brands of motels in the US have undergone similar attempts to rebrand themselves and distance their brands from both the specifically-sexual as well as perceived-as-cheap reputations they had.
