    Am I the only one who feels like still using employment rate as a metric for a healthy economy is basically just gaslighting at this point?

    Employment used to mean you had a good chance of affording a home, maybe two kids, and potentially even on just a single income. Now you can have a full time job and still need food stamps or a side job just to pay bills.

    Then of course, because salaries are so low relative to the cost of living, it makes employment numbers look even better because people who wouldn't have been forced to work now are. You have households where both parents have full time jobs, people with disabilities forced to work because they can't cover bills, students dropping out of college because it's now unaffordable.

    Then some goober economist comes on TV and goes "well, unemployment is at record lows so obviously everything is fine"

      @malwaretech When your now working 2 jobs where before you barely got by on one, and have to fish around McDonald's waste baskets for food, and they tell you it's the best economy "ever", while telling you "you have no choice but to vote for you know who", it's a guarantee of who will not vote at all. I am calling a Trump win, maybe even by a landslide, certainly not because I want to, but because the dems themselves are assuring it.

      @argv_minus_one that it comes accross as insulting, arrogant, and gaslighting, it will turn people away just as it did when the Peronists used this strategy and created a Milei landslide in Argentina. I don't expect miracles, but this approach and messaging is rather certain to lose the election.

      I'd rather be poor than be gassed in a concentration camp, thanks. Out here, at least I can arrange to die comfortably.

      What the hell do people expect Biden to do about the housing crisis, anyway? He's not a king, and the Republican-dominated Congress certainly isn't going to let him do anything about it.

      And, what, Americans are too stupid to realize that Trump will bring concentration camps and nuclear war?

      Then this is the final year of human civilization. Live it up, because on 2025-01-20, it ends.

      @argv_minus_one no, but a large minority actively want that. Many Americans really are that cruel and selfish, and too many more may either simply not care or be driven away. Many people who voted for Milei did so not because they wanted what he said he would do, but rather came to hate what the Peronists were saying and doing so much that they simply told themselves it wouldn't really, actually, be that bad. This is whats really happening here, too.

      @argv_minus_one and I agree it may be the final year, because the institutional political class is far too stupid and too committed to / compromised by it's own donors to save itself let alone anyone else.

      @freakazoid @argv_minus_one speaking of which, actually Trumps poll numbers are rising fastest among minorities. If you fail to understand why, you have NO HOPE to prevent it, either. I do not even know what the dems need to do, actually, but it is clear what they ARE doing will assure a Trump victory much like 2016, and so they MUST do something different. I think it would help if they actually listened to constituents rather than donors, though.

      @freakazoid @argv_minus_one yes, exactly. The dems are on a slow boat on de Nile river to oblivion presently. It could be called the riverboat of fools parable ;).

      @gnutelephony @argv_minus_one

      No matter what happens in November, if it's Biden vs Trump and Biden's approach hasn't substantively changed, we're all fucked. And plenty can happen before then. We can't wait until the election to take action. On the political side, we need to put the Democrats under as much pressure as we can. If we pull our punches because we're afraid of inadvertently helping Trump, we have no chance of success, and Trump may well win anyway.
