‘Self-hosting that works like an iPhone’ – @ben

Intriguing way of thinking about it

@lord @js @ben Last bullet could be done either with a unique feed URL (usually done for private feeds, like forges do this for notifications), or a slightly more modern technology like WebSub (formerly PubSubHubbub) or the actually modern one, ActivityPub.

@js @ben The author should consider using an rss aggregator.

      • As a user, I want to subscribe to an author.
      • I visit their site and click to subscribe, entering my details.
      • The site shows me a selection of other blogs or newsletters the author recommends.
      • I agree to subscribe to those. (Not as a paying subscriber, but as someone who will receive new content as it is published.)
      • I am instantly fully subscribed, without having to enter any further information on those third party sites.
      • The authors of those sites know that they gained new subscribers that were referred from the recommending site.

Appart from the last bullet, this already exists with rss for 20 years.

@lord @js @ben Nah, in fact I almost grunted against doing that, the greatest thing about RSS/Atom (and usenet I guess ^^) is how you can just grab a feed pretty much anonymously.
It's like the equivalent of turning on the radio/Tv.

@lanodan @js @ben it could be, but should we ? There are tracking everywhere, we don't need more of it.

      @js @adam @ben

The more I see people wanting to move away from closed garden platforms to open protocols, to more I see that RSS already solved this problem 20 years ago and we just need to find our way back to the path.

With podcast:value, and podcast:funding, the monetary support issue has largely been solved.

I think that's what these guys are trying to accomplish, though I'm not a big fan of the price tag. I'm a cheap-ass though.

@adam @ben yes i think they would say that, but - running an umbrel myself - not sure if they've achieved mass-market usability yet.

Also, they seem very bitcoin focused, with services built around that

Whereas I take Ben here as thinking about something writing/publishing focused, with services built around that

Also I'm assuming the definition of self-hosted here is less "run from my house" and more "run from my own domain"

@js @ben Isn't this what Start9 and umbrel are attempting?
