@charliebrownau @CapitalB there's no doubt that the others are flawed and using existing infrastructure is a great idea.

I'm thinking the same can be applied for Notes applications for instance, can Joplin be sync-ed with an IMAP server ? It would be interesting to see a WebDav bridge to IMAP

      Basically everything with soy.
Though if it needs to be IRC, I heard of one project that wants to turn IRC into a "modern chat app" disaster.
Hell, even Gajim, an XMPP client, went full blown Discucked-wannabee...

Profanity sucks donkey anus when it comes to navigation, and enabling OMEMO every time is much more of a hassle than in other clients.

And Dino has potential, but still in early development so it lacks way too many essential features.
Plus it's a very typical GTK 4 (previously GTK 3) app, so the UI is quite cancerous.

I'm also keeping a close eye on Communique, which is a TUI app like Profanity, but much easier to navigate through, but just like Dino, it's still in early development.

      Kind of.
It's made by the same guys who made the C language when they worked at Bells Lab (which also made Unix), and now they work at Goolag.
Though seems like Goolag is having a hands off approach on Go, and lets the community develop it under strict supervision of the guys who made C and Go.
But since they're Goolag employees, Goolag loves to brag about Go as if it was one of their own products.

@charliebrownau @CapitalB @mcread @ryo Yeah, even on the BSDs, you are probably at least going to have dbus since it's a dependency for everything, that there is no replacement for. And avoiding GTK is just barely possible if you use Qt, but good luck doing that, and it's not like Qt is all that much better anyway, Seems extremely corporate and I may have heard something about them not developing the free version of Qt anymore, or something. I don't know.

I actually remember something on a BSD having pulseaudio as a dependency. I think it may have been a web browser on FreeBSD. Maybe Qutebrowser. Probably unnecessary, not sure what they were thinking there. Maybe there was something like that on OpenBSD too. It's just bizarre, considering that both of those OSs actually have pretty good sound, unlike Linux (that has the worst audio that you will ever find on anything ever). FreeBSD has some extended version of OSS4, and OpenBSD that sndio, and both are simpler and work without having these gigantic freedesktop/Red Hat monstrosities stacked on top of them.

Anyway, it's all fucked. Software that respects your freedom is dead. And free software as a term and concept is so dead I can't even use it anymore because I am actively against it. And it's all corporate, corporations took it all over and there was zero resistance.

@ryo @CapitalB @charliebrownau @mcread Only Hyperbola. I looked into this in the past and have known about Hyperbola for a few years. Anyway, it's kinda interesting, but very few people knew about Hyperbola before, and I never heard of it anywhere, and then I mentioned it in two or three places and since then I have seen it being mentioned a lot more. Still a very small thing, though. Especially when some of the people that tried it had some issue or another and concluded that it wasn't all that viable yet, but maybe it had improved. It definitely could, if more people were interested in it.

@charliebrownau @CapitalB @mcread @ryo I used Devuan a lot and it's definitely a good distribution. It still has systemd components (like dbus, that even the BSDs have), but that's every distribution other than Hyperbola. But Hyperbola has different priorities and doesn't compromise. They actually don't have Rust or anything written in Rust. It also has no proprietary software, it's one of the distributions approved by the FSF.
