Drew DeVault (drewdevault@fosstodon.org)'s status on Wednesday, 10-Jan-2024 06:49:19 JST Drew DeVault My partner is only moderately technical and their new employer dropped it on their laptop and said "good luck", took 16 hours to go from "here's a flash drive with NixOS on it" to "laptop has working FDE and can run sway but only sort of and KDE is still there even though it's not being used"

zardoz.el (zardoz03@mastodon.online)'s status on Wednesday, 10-Jan-2024 06:50:08 JST zardoz.el @drewdevault NixOS is probably the worst cases of functional fervour i am aware of. Some of the OK ideas like "the package manager has a full picture of all software on the system" makes sense in a vacuum. But NixOS does it in a way that breaks too many assumptions and in such a way that makes using it, makes you suffer from dogmatism.
consfigurator for Debian is probably saner overall while keeping the "declarative OS" lark

Drew DeVault (drewdevault@fosstodon.org)'s status on Wednesday, 10-Jan-2024 06:55:44 JST Drew DeVault I wonder if the way I feel when people say "but it's this great functional and declarative and super elegant DSL configuration-based operating system" kind of jargon is how others feel when I talk about how git is good actually
