It's cool to see a non-Malaysian interview #Malaysians about this. Though saying we speak 5-7 languages is a stretch lol. The average is more like 2-4, and it depends on what location, race & education. In Penang it's easier to find trilingual folks, for eg. There are some people who only speak ONE language, but they have to usually add another to improve their work opportunities in Malaysia.
@EllenInEdmonton Bahasa yes, English no. And we have private schools here that doesn't emphasise Bahasa, which I think is a bad idea. It's the no. 1 language to learn in Malaysia. The reason why I am able to understand 4 languages is due to where I lived and went to school, to be honest.
@liztai Ah, that makes sense. I guess that I was mistakenly under the impression that a lot of schooling was in English, as it is in many post-colonial countries but now I remember Malaysian ESL books that I picked up/used when I was in #ViệtNam.
@EllenInEdmonton the confusing thing is we have many language medium schools, and yes we do have private schools that exclusively teach in English, tho most national schools teach English and Malay.
