Midnight passed on the east coast. New year! It's nearly 2:00 there now.

Although most of the Aleutian Islands are not populated, there are 95 people living on Atka Island: 52°08′17″N 174°26′43″W. Being the westernmost population in the US (UTC-10), they're still five hours from 2024: http://new.earthtools.org/timezone/52.138056/-174.445278 . The population of the village of Atka is 53 as of the 2020 census: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Atka,_Alaska .

The 47,329 citizens the Northern Mariana Islands and the 168,801 citizens of Guam are US citizens, though. They're all UTC+10, which is, per the Census department's ZCTA data, the easternmost US timezone. The absolute easternmost zip code is in Tinian (96952, at 15°0′0″N, 145°38′0″E), which also has the distinction of being the place where Little Boy was loaded into the Enola Gay. Apparently, various companies keep trying to build hotels and casinos but it falls through every time, due to financial troubles, allegations of money laundering, etc.: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tinian (photos are from there). The air and naval bases remain.

At any rate, it's now late afternoon there: 16:41.

      Tinian
Tinian () is one of the three principal islands of the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands. Together with uninhabited neighboring Aguiguan, it forms Tinian Municipality, one of the four constituent municipalities of the Northern Marianas. Tinian's largest village is San Jose. Tinian is just south of the most inhabited island Saipan, but north of the populated Rota to the south. The island is home to many WW2 historical sites, cattle ranches, and beaches. There was a 5-star casino that operated from 1998 to 2016; remaining are other hotels/resorts and a golf course. The main access to Saipan is by a short airplane ride from the international airport, or by a charter boat. Tinian is a part of the United States, and is also a part of the CNMI. Along with Guam, they are the westernmost islands of the US in the Pacific (technically very far east). History First settlers The Mariana Islands, of which Tinian is one, were the first islands settled by humans...

Four. I spent about an hour in the wikkypeeja hole and then decided Wikipedia is useless and started tearing through some data files that I had laying around from a GIS project from 2015.

@Paradox Ha, apparently it costs more to fly from LAX to Saipan, capital of the Mariana islands, than to Narita International. (LAX to SPN is $2-3k.)

Wikipedia has an article about a dissident website: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saipan_Sucks

        Saipan Sucks
Saipan Sucks (SaipanSucks.com) was a politically and socially critical website about the United States's Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands (CNMI), particularly its principal island Saipan. The website sought to call attention to what it alleged to be systemic societal corruption in the CNMI. It was in existence between 2001 and September 2014, and was reported on in a variety of ways in local, regional, and international newsprint and magazine outlets, on ABC Radio Australia, and Internet forums and blogs. The website was the subject of intense debate and scrutiny by the CNMI government, which threatened to sue the website's author. In contrast, the site's author is celebrated in the 2012 novel The Master Blaster by writer and former Saipan Peace Corps Volunteer P. F. Kluge. Content Saipan Sucks seeks to call attention to what it alleges to be systemic societal problems in the CNMI that are supported by misuse of United States taxpayer money. Press outlets have quoted the following excerpt from the website: Nepotism rules on the islands. Fueled by money paid by American taxpayers and...

@p Probably because it's a smaller place so there's less infrastructure for efficiency. Costs more to deal with that.

@Paradox Yep; fewer people on the plane. I was actually kind of surprised it was that cheap. Some places can be impossible to get to or from and those islands are about as close as you can get to the middle of nowhere.

It is only worth running because people post here, so I should thank you.

(This place will out-live me if I get done what I plan to get done.)

        Midway Atoll
Midway Atoll (colloquial: Midway Islands; Hawaiian: Kuaihelani, lit. 'the backbone of heaven'; Pihemanu, 'the loud din of birds') is a 2.4 sq mi (6.2 km2) atoll in the North Pacific Ocean. Midway Atoll is an insular area of the United States and is an unorganized and unincorporated territory. The largest island is Sand Island, which has housing and an airstrip. Immediately to the east of Sand Island across the narrow Brooks Channel is Eastern Island, which is uninhabited and no longer has any facilities. Forming a rough, incomplete circle around the two main islands and creating Midway Lagoon is Spit Island, a narrow reef.Roughly equidistant between North America and Asia, Midway is the only island in the Hawaiian Archipelago that is not part of the state of Hawaii. Unlike the other Hawaiian islands, Midway observes Samoa Time (UTC−11:00, i.e., eleven hours behind Coordinated Universal Time), which is one hour behind the time in the Hawaii–Aleutian Time Zone used in Hawaii. For statistical purposes, Midway is grouped as one...
