Michigan automatically registers people to vote when they get a driver's license.

This year, it adopted a new law to also register people automatically when they sign up for Medicaid, obtain a Native American tribal ID, or are released from prison.

Michigan Law Would Be First to Automatically Register People to Vote As They Leave Prison - Bolts
      from Daniel Nichanian
The legislature passed a bill last week that would expand automatic voter registration in a number of other ways, and likely add many new Michiganders to voter rolls.

@bolts In contrast, I didn't vote in one election in the 14 years I have lived in Missouri, and I have already been informed that I have been removed from the voter rolls, and need to send in the postcard if I am still here and a voter, or be turned away at the polls. So, check your registration, people!

@bolts This is great. In Canada, there's an option to send your updated address information to Elections Canada when you file your taxes; it's also relatively easy to cast provisional ballots with photo ID and proof of address.

@bolts didn't know this and luckily caught it when my wife got her license. Wasn't a US citizen at that time

@bolts in Switzerland you're registered for voting when you turn 18. You get your voting material (5 times a year) delivered at home. You fill it out, and send it back or drop it at the administration up to one week before the votations.

No long waiting lines, no drama about voting on workdays.

I never understood this thing about getting registered to vote. Once you're a citizen, why shouldn't you just be signed up automatically? Is this about missing address files?
