I am strongly positive. I sponsor Patreons and other subscriptions, and I think they're pretty cool. I've supported some Substack authors, but not anymore. I'd like to see this pattern possible on the fediverse.
I think there is a strong difference between want to pay and have to pay, especially when I think about how the fediverse would have to be changed to introduce mechanisms to enable this.
The least objectionable I can think of is a private account (does this already exist) with some out-of-band management to whitelist payers who could then follow.
Seems like a really good idea. Strongly positive too.
To be clear, imagining this would be just as a way to have subscriptions for things like newsletters or video services, as an additional capability. Not assuming it would change anything about the way the free fediverse functions or have to be supported by all instances.
@evan It is definitely possible, and implemented in my project Mitra. Here, "subscribers" and "followers" are different categories, and subscribers-only posts are published in a private group that uses mentions for targeting and therefore compatible with other popular micro-blogging platforms.
A variant of FEP-0837 protocol is used for federated payments. People on servers that don't support FEP-0837 can make a payment by navigating to a special payment page.
