feld (feld@bikeshed.party)'s status on Wednesday, 27-Dec-2023 01:17:51 JST feld @mWare I have a local aox that I use to backup/archive my real email accounts. I'm not using it as a primary IMAP server right now, but I kinda wish I could without having to deal with the nonsense of spam filtering etc etc -

Myke (mware@mstdn.ca)'s status on Wednesday, 27-Dec-2023 02:59:13 JST Myke @feld I'm stilllll running mine as primary - with paying customers on it. Proxmox Mail Gateway appliance in front of it has greatly improved the spam/DKIM management too.
I think I need to put nginx in front of AOX to proxy for SSL, since the TLS proxy lib blows up every few hours.

feld (feld@bikeshed.party)'s status on Wednesday, 27-Dec-2023 10:11:17 JST feld @mWare well truthfully the code is pretty clean and the RFCs that need to be implemented are done, the database side has no real need for changes (except I want to hack in real support for wildcard addresses) so there's not much to maintain
I bet it just needs an update to something related to its crypto library -

Myke (mware@mstdn.ca)'s status on Wednesday, 27-Dec-2023 10:11:18 JST Myke @feld frankly am unfamiliar with both.
I do wish some other folks would pick up the mantle of maintaining AOX, but Arnt & Abhijit certainly weren't beginners at this project... well beyond my skills.

Myke (mware@mstdn.ca)'s status on Wednesday, 27-Dec-2023 10:15:37 JST Myke @feld oh, 10+ years ago they were starting to wonder if their decision to use tlsproxy might've been a mistake despite the shithole that OpenSSL was at the time.
... and then the project activity dwindled. When was the last time you saw any mailing list action? I think it was from *me* about 18 months ago when I finally figured out how to make modern Thunderbird work again.

feld (feld@bikeshed.party)'s status on Wednesday, 27-Dec-2023 10:15:37 JST feld @mWare I like the project so much but am discouraged from spending time with C that I've considered rewriting it in Elixir as a drop in replacement and then it would be simple to wire up a web admin control panel -

Myke (mware@mstdn.ca)'s status on Wednesday, 27-Dec-2023 10:19:31 JST Myke @feld uh. That sounds kinda amazing... but are you in a position to support it long term? Or garner community support?
Frankly there's no reason you couldn't split MDA vs MTA parts and use the same schema…

feld (feld@bikeshed.party)'s status on Wednesday, 27-Dec-2023 10:19:31 JST feld @mWare Oh yeah the identical schema would be used because I want to be able to read my mail out of that same database but with Elixir code instead
It's one of those things that could turn into an amazing email-in-a-box projects but it requires time to focus on it 😭 -

Myke (mware@mstdn.ca)'s status on Wednesday, 27-Dec-2023 10:24:58 JST Myke @zop @feld ... have you ever looked at https://archiveopteryx.org/ ? Like, it doesn't NEED anything done to it other than fixing TLS/SSL, and some minor spit 'n polish.
... Ain't Elixir tho.
