I pulled the trigger and bought my brother a Slimbook laptop as a Christmas present. I've only read good opinions about this Spanish brand and, on top of that, they send it to you with GNU/Linux preinstalled.

Alejandro (alejandrobdn@social.linux.pizza)'s status on Saturday, 23-Dec-2023 17:52:41 JST Alejandro @redstarfish I haven't read anything about them that points in that direction, but, after all, it's GNU/Linux, Linux Mint in the case of this laptop: `sudo apt purge X` and that's it.
I understand that you are not talking about this but about the philosophy that is used as a background for these initiatives, but from a practical point of view we are not tied to anything like in other OS.

Regarding the issue, I didn't find an explicit sentence on their website in my first search, but I don't think they use closed hardware, especially since they sell their equipment with the option to choose from a multitude of distros (it would be difficult to guarantee 100%% compatibility).
