What’s the current evidence on the relative merits of getting Novavax as a booster vs getting yet more Moderna/Pfizer boosters?

I know there was speculation that protein-based vaccines like Novavax •might• provide protection complementary to mRNA-based vaccines, and that mixing and matching •might• do better than merely repeating.

What’s the status of the science on that? A web search suggests “fuzzy.” Anybody have useful info beyond “heard on social media?”

What info I •have• been able to find:

      - Novavax seems to involve fewer/milder side effects for many
      - It’s approximately as effective as the mRNA ones
      - At 95 days since last booster, I’m now into the period of waning efficacy

So my loose conclusion is: “No harm in the mix and match, maybe some benefit and maybe not.”

If there’s more I should know, either to bolster or to contradict that, I’d love to hear it!

UPDATE: Previous post seems to jive with what info I was able to gather.

Got a Novavax booster yesterday. (That’s on top of my 2023 Moderna back in Sep.) No problem with the additional booster; I just signed up and got one.

~26 hours after the shot, zero side effects so far. Not just mild. Zero.

I got it at the CVS at my local Target. Apparently all CVS locations have it, or are supposed to.

FYI, the CVS web site said that appointments are not necessary. That is false; ours turned us away and told us to get an appt and come back.

I wad pissed until I saw the reason: severe understaffing behind the counter, end of year prescription rush, pharmacist at the end of her rope.

When I came back for the shot, the pharmacist thanked me profusely just because I wasn’t mean to her when I had to wait 10 min. 😢 The disinvestment, the corporate cost-cutting, the human cost-making it causes…

Nobody know wtf they’re supposed to be doing at this point. Just a total public health faceplant.

@inthehands Hmm I got my last shot in Sept also. And got covid a month ago. Hadn't even considered getting Novavax sooner than next fall. 🤔

@inthehands i have trouble with their just-in-the-nick-of-time stocking of some of the stuff i need. The staff behind the counter are great, but corporate management is squeezing the bejesus out of them.

@inthehands @jongary Target used to be one of my fave retailers. A few months ago, we went into the one here in Santa Fe, and couldn’t find a single red-shirted human. It was like a zombie apocalypse of Target employees. Watched one guy with some expensive electronic package in his hands walk to the cashiers, look around and see nobody around, shrug and just walk out with it. Alarms went off, but still no employees appeared.

We haven’t been back. I’ll buy my t.p. elsewhere.

UPDATE: I did notice some mild soreness at the injection site — not in normal usage, but when I squeezed the spot gently.

This was immediately after ripping off the band-aid, and faded soon after. Working theory:

Band-Aid side effects > Novavax side effects

@inthehands I booked a CVS appointment for vax in October and hours before they called me and said Kaiser wouldn't cover it so they had to cancel.

      Hmph
