     @mattly they should all line up neatly in a <pre>, and i assume you can do some keming to make them work in non-fixed-pitch fonts too

     I'm on a pretty old macos, so these look pretty janky to me, but i think this should be about right:

     ┬─╴top
     └┬╴middle
     └╴end

     it might need some keming to make it join up

     @mattly I definitely can't do that in a mastodon post.

     not sure if i could do it in a browser either, i guess you could do some tricks with borders and negative margins?

     I guess the ascii art thing i'm thinking of in my brain is just a layout engine that's just responsible for |'s and -'s
