Honestly, all this talk about who's defederating from who and how blocky we need to be is starting to sound real Twittery.

@RickiTarr Perhaps we should
Let it be, let it be, let it be, let it be?
Why not empower individual users to make their own decision on matters like this?
Am I wrong in my thinking?

@mentallyalex It's a line we walk between safety and openness, but one of the things I like is that I can basically personalize my account the way I want, and it's totally fine if someone wants to do it differently than I do.

@RickiTarr agreed. People seem to be very keen on the idea that only specific people and types of people should be allowed to participate. I don't know if I am a fan of how exclusionary that sounds.
Obviously we invite trolls and bad actors, but that is society. Building defenses and resistance to them is healthy. Pretending they can't exist is a dangerous mindset.

@RickiTarr exactly.
I enjoy the control I have here. Between client and admin tools, there seem to be a lot of safety options built in. I'm sure they can improve but we are working on it. In the meantime I feel like we should work to play nice with all options and prevent harm.

Protecting the vulnerable should be paramount. Asking people who left Meta because of hateful comments is like asking a battered woman to returnto an abusive huisband.
Not to mention the absurd lack of morals and ethics Meta has repeatedly displayed over the years, contributing to the destuction of democracies by spreading misinformation, disinformation and hate.

@Snowshadow @mentallyalex I don't think anyone disagrees with protecting vulnerable people. But saying everyone on Threads is a monster also feels bad too. The magic of Mastodon is we can have it both ways, if you want to interact you can, and if you don't, you don't have to.
