#isolategab - for those choosing “what is gab?” Here is your answer and a good summary of how things started: https://www.vice.com/en/article/mb8y3x/the-nazi-free-alternative-to-twitter-is-now-home-to-the-biggest-far-right-social-network

Mastodon Was Designed to Be a Nazi-Free Twitter—Now It’s the Exact Opposite
Gab, which has been used frequently by neo-Nazi terror groups to organize and recruit, is now the biggest node on the Mastodon network.

@Lats Yeah it was a fork of Mastodon, and then later a fork that defederated. So pretty much after the first major tweaks to the source code it ceased to be "mastodon."

@tchambers it uses mastodon software so it is said to be mastodon. As mastodon instances block it, does it remain “a mastodon instance“? I would say that mastodon is working as designed in that undesirables can be blocked. If the Gab or any other group sets up using whatever technology, they can exist in their own bubble.

The emphasis should be that the Gab is not mastodon, it uses publicly available software and is its own network.

@Kiloku In the article, I'll work on why I helped lead the effort to block Gab then and why I am advocating not preemptively blocking threads now. But more later.

@tchambers the difference between gab and threads is that in threads the fascists are only allowed to stay as long as they only use dogwhistles.

Of course, we should still block any haven for fascists, whether it's a discreet one or not.

@tchambers It's a little misleading in that basically *every* non-Nazi instance defederates Gab.

@timbray Yes and that was an old article, I think written before Gab fully dropped ActivtyPub.

@tchambers Yeah, it left the impression that Gab was still sorta kinda part of the Fediverse screen. Sure, the Masto folk said drop dead, but I think it's more important to note that there are basically zero Fedi instances that federate with Gab
