@smug my brain automatically did 10/2. I think I should have paid attention in the 5th grade.

Teaching is like nursing, in that failed stoners that couldn't do the actual thing (Doctors) flunk out and phone it in.

Because cutting the board in half is 1 cut = 10 minutes. To cut a board into 3 pieces is two cuts = 20 minutes. The kid got it correct.

10 minutes for one cut, therefore it takes 20 minutes for two cuts

So 10/2 is the math way, but normally you'd see that you require 10 minute to do a task that can split a board into two parts. To split it twice, you'd require two actions to do so, which means it takes 20 minutes. It's like the question "a woman requires 9 months to give birth to a child. How long does it take 9 women to do the same?"

@kirby Marie was slacking off while doing the first cut, her supervisor went to check on her at the 14 minute mark, and she promptly finished the cut a minute later.

@cvnt @kirby that reminds me, when I was in 1st grade, we got an assignment to "write a story told by the character in the picture" (which was a children's comic book character from here), and since I joined 1st grade already knowing how to read and I used to devour my older brother comic books, I not only wrote the story as if the character was telling it, but I also used the character's speech mannerisms (he was a "hillbilly character", so in the books he spoke in a certain way, and spelled many words the wrong way).
The teacher completely wrecked me, gave me 0, and called my parents to say she was "very worried with my development". In the end, due to this and many other issues I had with that same teacher, I had to start seeing a children's therapist because they genuinely thought I was retarded. And then the therapist saw all my "problematic" assignments and realized said teacher had a sub human IQ, and she managed to explain to everyone that it wasn't me who was retarded, it was the teacher.

This is rather depressing when you consider how fast and loose educators must now play with literacy to "pick up the bottom line"; imagine expecting a 1st grade to explain how they would feel if they didn't have breakfast.

@kirby Marie can complete 1 cut in 10 minutes, it will require 2 cuts to turn 1 piece into 3 pieces.

The teacher treated it as an idealized rate problem. Where Marie can create 1 new piece every 5 minutes.
