Yeah I'm not really digging the emphasis on individual responsibility in terms of blocking the vile stuff that Meta are fine with being spat out onto the internet. Not least because that means I'm expected to be exposed to some crap, then afterwards go and block the source. Servers can and ought to be safe spaces where through our collective agreement at registration such garbage will simply not reach us. I am thankful for the server I'm on, and its admins.

Also, surely we're not seriously over here enjoying an example of the internet's wondrous possibilities for social engagement and social change with the Fediverse...then welcoming in one of the most vile tech companies that inspired so many of us to be part of the Fediverse in the first place. Are we? I thought we were building something different? What next, Elon Musk? Jack Dorsey? Oh, wait...shit.

Seriously though. We're not here because we want to be part of the old world. We're here to replace that - by building the new world in the shell of the old. Right? I used to like that quote by singer Camille about working to make what is not popular...popular. You know, as opposed to just abandoning our cool punk bands to instead go and get Simon Cowell's endorsement and get a deal with a big record label and never change anything. Fuck that shit.

@noondlyt @MediaActivist
I've previously compared this personalized blocking burden as equivalent to telling people suffering the perils of climate change to go recycle. Not only is it an individualistic answer to a collective problem, but also, it won't solve anything -

@MediaActivist We have to adapt. Not accept, but adapt. I am on the server that is actively encouraging this federation. I have preemptively blocked the threads domain. It is an experiment. I want to know how much will still get through. Am I going to have to change instances? I will definitely lose people because they will block mastodon.social. This place has to be able to stand in the face of terrible intrusions because threads won't be the last.
