The most common person you see riding a bike is a man with a backpack*

And that's just sad! Mostly b/c our cities should be safe for everyone to ride bikes! But also because a backpack is the worst way to carry things on a bike!

If someone in your life bikes to work or anything like that, and you don't know what to give them for Christmas, now you do: Give them a pannier!

I promise you they will enjoy their ride so much more! Maybe they'll even ride more often

You really don't understand how much lighter and freer you feel riding a bike without something pressing down on your shoulders and back until you've gotten used to using a backpack to carry your school books or your work laptop or whatever every time you ride, and then go out for a spin without it!

Wow! It's a like a different experience all together.

It feels so nice! Not only to ride like that, but also to get to your destination and not be sweaty on your back.

So maybe you take the bike to work more often when it feels better and you don't fear the sweat. So now your friend or family member will have better days and live longer! What an amazing gift!

But if you don't know anything about this stuff, where do you start?

In the next toot I'll give just a few tips on how to pick out a good pannier for a gift.

      3/5?

      - If they often walk a bit from where they park, a pannier that also works as a backpack or has a shoulder strap is useful
      - There are tons of colors and styles of panniers. Try to find one that matches the recipient and their bike. Maybe you even feel they would prefer one for the handlebar, just make sure it's big enough for what they carry
      - I prefer when they are easy to take off and carry, so I recommend a single side pannier over those that go on both sides
      - Never buy anything from Amazon

*How do I know this is most common? Well, I don't really, and for me I think I mostly see people not carrying anything actually? Though there is a huge diversity of people on bikes here in Oslo, thankfully. And I feel like I more and more see people with a cargobike of some sort, which is great, but a bit expensive for a gift for most people. But there's also quite a few people out with bike trailers, and if they carry lots of stuff/a kid, and you want to give a big gift (with someone else)…? ->

-> But this factoid, and the nice drawing, comes from the really cool YouTuber Shifter, which got tons of viewers around the world to go out and count people they saw biking trough an intersection. This was the result. I guess most people counted during rush hour, and that's why they saw so many with a backpack?

Anyway, you should go watch that video now! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D93NC_eg3ws

      And subscribe.

And also get a pannier for someone out there having a suboptimal time riding a bike with a backpack

Oh, and Shifter also has a video with gift ideas for people who ride bikes: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LHWTZFRu7zY

But if they often ride with a backpack I would definitely go with the pannier first. If a new one is too expensive look for a used one! Seriously, it's allowed to give used gifts, they are just as useful!

This is 7/7, I guess? I was way off in my estimation of how long this #thread would be! :ludvig:

@forteller I can highly recommend these for the backpack pannier:

      https://www.basil.com/en/ever-green-bicycle-daypack-beige.html

We got two and they were well liked before the kids abandoned bikes for kick scooters.

So, did anyone here end up giving any bike panniers as a Christmas gift? I'd love to hear about it!
