     I learned my multiplication tables by memorizing half and then filling in the other half by subtraction.
     
     For example
     
     9x9 = 9x10 - 9x1
     9x8 = 9x10 - 9x2

     When I was in high school, I could multiply large numbers and do long division in my head. I was one of those "never showed his work" kids as a result.
     
     I can't do it anymore. Some things got lost as I aged.
