As I understand it, Meta has a phased rollout plan regarding ActivityPub. Its efforts today are little more than effectively reposting a few Threads accounts to ActivityPub, but it will start adding features for tighter integration throughout the course of next year. https://www.threads.net/@zuck/post/C0zXcQmxO77/?igshid=NTc4MTIwNjQ2YQ%3D%3D
@fisherstudio the initial test (starting today) will be that some threads content will be available on ActivityPub (just to follow). So it's basically just account replication for now. Other features will roll out next year.
@mmasnick I’m so entrenched in Camp 1 (wants nothing to do with Meta) I can’t even bear to click that. What did he say? Nah, I’ll see it eventually, no big deal. ❤️ appreciate you and your podcast theme song a lot, Mr. M. Thank you
@mmasnick TBH, that's how I'd test it. Cautiously optimistic. If Activitypub becomes Just How Shit Gets Made like SMTP and RSS, that's a win even if most people stay on Threads/big social crap
And if they can follow me here without me having to touch threads, hey, that's nice. That's what I like about Misskey. Should be the standard.
@monorailtimes my understanding is that it's just going to start with a few Meta employees. I'd guess Adam Mosseri would be the first, but I don't know for sure.
@mmasnick When do they plan to support automatic account migration from Threads to other ActivityPub instances. Is that on their roadmap. Does anyone care?
@mmasnick i am pretty new to fediverse so maybe this has been hashed out in way too much detail at an earlier time, but can anyone summarize what are the main concerns of the fediverse folks who are clearly not looking forward to threads/Big-Zuck integrating with ActivityPub?
@Kay initially yes, but early next year they say they plan to start integration actual interactions between threads and the fediverse, starting with passing back info on likes / boosts and eventually to full on replies etc.
@mmasnick Thanks. I don't use Instagram so while I may want to favourite posts by people I would follow in the Fediverse, I won't leave Mastodon to do so.
Account replication sounds like a bot reposting content without any interaction options. Is that right?
@mmasnick Unfortunately, it looks like mastodon(.)social and associated instances have defederated Threads already, so we're unlikely to experience Threads through ActivityPub. I wonder if we'll see people migrating toward instances that have not defederated so they can follow folks on Threads.
